First Grade
First Grade is a critical developmental year for children in the area of literacy. Students learn and implement the five components of literacy during this year. The five components are phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.

Comprehension
Phonemic Awareness
- Ensure that sounds and words are rticulated correctly.
Phonics
- Help your child spell by talking about words and what vowel patterns make certain sounds. Example: baby-when we hear the "e" sound at the end of words it is the letter "y" not e. When the letter e is at the end of a word it is silent.
Vocabulary
- Vocabulary is built through conversation and experience.
- Talk about different words when reading with your child and synonymns and antonymns for words.
Fluency
- Fluency is rate, expression, AND accuracy.
- Fluency affects comprehension; therefore, it is critical that students are aware of what fluency is and how to read fluently. When students are reading without fluency, they are word calling and not "reading".
- Repeated reading and reading easier text helps increase fluency.
- Listening to books on tape models fluency and increases listening comprehension skills.
